Hernani Wilderness Hut
Hernani, nsw, australia
This country getaway in NSW, in the New England Tablelands, is a truly unique experience. The hut is designed to take in the stunning 360 degree views of the Australian bush, and is surrounded by a 100 year old orchard of nectarines, cherries, plums and pears, where the old Hernani school used to be. It’s peaceful and totally private and you are only left with yourself and the beautiful landscape of bush and pasture surrounding you. The incredible night skies, breathtaking colours of the sunrises and sunsets, the sounds of the native birds and Australian wildlife such as kangaroos and wombats are plentiful. As are rabbit, foxes and local cattle. Our cleverly restored eco-hut, is well-insulated, sleeping up to nine people in a comfortable design that provides all that you need for a great country retreat. There is little privacy in this hut due to its open plan style, however, if you’re sharing this experience with close friends and family you’ll have a wonderful time together. There is also plenty of room for extra campers and camper trailers. This hut has been crafted from recycled timber and fittings with off-grid solar power, slow-combustion heating and indoor-outdoor living options to take advantage of the stunning daytime vistas and sparkling night skies. Adventurers, bushwalkers and nature lovers will delight in the easy access to fishing spots, horse riding trails, waterfalls, swimming holes, lookouts and walking tracks in all directions. This country escape is situated right on the Australian National Trail allowing you access to the longest uninterrupted walking and riding trail in the southern hemisphere. The hut is a short 10 minute drive to Ebor town for basic supplies and Ice but far enough away to retreat and replenish in a unique, breathtaking setting.

The space
This hut is the ultimate “Slow Stay” experience, catering to the more conscious traveller, for those who care about treading lightly on our planet and who understand the value of managing our limited resources. The idea of unplugging, and enjoying the simplicity of life’s little wonders is why we created this space. It’s a stepping back in time kind of holiday, a chance to get back to the basics, cooking good food, chatting fireside with a glass of wine, surrounded by the heart achingly beautiful Australian bush and wildlife, it’s a chance to reconnect with yourself and those you love. Hernani hut, has a way of slowing time down, the mesmerising scenery, incredible sunsets and night skies, make this a magical place to rest and recharge.
This fantastic bush cabin in NSW has four sleeping spaces, including a small loft with a single and queen sized mattress suitable for children, and three queen size beds downstairs. If you want to bring extra friends, there is plenty of room outside for them to pitch a tent or a camper trailer, where there is an outdoor bonfire pit, outdoor sink and the amenities (shower and toilet) are also located outside, which means your camping friends will not disturb you at night. The outside bathroom with toilet and shower has glorious views over the paddocks and fruit trees. From late spring to early autumn you can help yourselves to the nectarines, cherries, plums and pears (before the birds do!)
The hut has an open-plan living space which can be closed off with a glass door for winter comfort and includes a kitchen with a slow-combustion stove and gas cooktop. There’s no fridge (they use a lot of power!) but you can keep fresh produce icy cold in the large 125L commercial Esky – an old-fashioned ice box with plenty of storage. Ice is available at the Ebor service station a ten minute drive away.
Our hybrid slow-combustion-solar power set-up means there is minimal power for gadgetry, but a single power outlet allows you to recharge small electronic devices. Please do not plug in anything larger than a mobile phone, laptop or camera battery as it will damage our small system. Telstra’s 3G network provides mobile coverage and a hot spot for your devices.
There is no TV here, so take the opportunity to really switch off for a few days and bring a good book. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own downloaded games and movies on your tablets, or simply enjoy having some gadget free time.
Hernani hut is the perfect place to self retreat and finish that book! You’re completely secluded from the world and can immerse yourself in your creativity without distractions or interruptions. If you are looking for a place to get away from the crowds, you will love it here.
We supply a stack of board games and puzzles, cards and books, so staying here is a chance to chat fireside, play games, read and relax the old-fashioned way.
The National Trail & National Parks
The hut is surrounded by 3 magnificent national parks; Mt Highland, The Guy Fawkes and the New England National Park. Please ensure you follow the bushwalking safety protocol and tread lightly in these beautiful places. Particularly beautiful walks located in the New England National Park, are Point Lookout and Weeping rock, there are also many fresh water streams to have a swim in and enjoy some mountain trout fishing. Check google maps for directions.
Extra Guests
You may not bring extra guests over and above your booking without notifying us first and paying an additional small charge for their stay. Extra guests are an additional $25 per guest per night. If you would like to bring extra friends please make sure to let us know.

Arrival & Things to know
Getting to Hernani Hut is part of your wildnerness adventure. It’s accessible in a conventional two-wheel drive vehicle in dry weather, provided it has good clearance. Low-set vehicles such as sports cars are not suitable. Once you have booked you will receive an automated email with the hut information and directions for the hut. You will not be able to find the hut from Google maps. It’s a fairly easy, well-marked 1km off-road drive from the main Road. Plan to arrive well before sunset, as the hut can be difficult to find in the dark.
Also be aware that in wet weather the access road can be slippery. As Hernani is a regional New South Wales wilderness experience the property does experience periods of heavy rain, we will notify you if there has been heavy rains or floods. In this circumstance you may need to bring an all-wheel or 4WD drive or talk to us about rescheduling your stay. Your safety is our first priority and we will always communicate clearly and quickly about any major weather considerations that may impact your holiday. If you are unable to reach the hut due to weather conditions, we will happily refund your stay if you do not wish to re-schedule.
Your hosts are NOT on site
The hut is totally private and self-contained and there is no face to face interaction with us. We live one hour away in Bellingen where we run three busy farm stays; The Bellingen Vintage Farmstay, The Bellingen Farmhouse and the Bellingen Farm Shed as well as our biodynamic working farm. We have a caretaker that cleans and prepares the hut for your stay, they then check that our gas, solar and water systems have been properly switched off within 24 hours of your departure. Our caretaker lives nearby and is available in emergency situations only. Once you depart, our caretaker will notify me of the condition you have left the hut and we will then reimburse your security damage deposit bond.
What we provide and what you need to bring
We keep the hut clean and stocked with firewood and there are plenty of pillows, doonas, blankets and mozzie nets. We provide soap, toilet paper, basic pantry supplies, tea towels, matches, firelighters, newspaper, and a fully equiped kitchen.
Please bring your own linen (pillows cases, fitted & flat sheets to put over own bedding) and please bring your own towels. All beds are queen sized. We also have one single bed. The Hut supplies pillows, doonas and blankets.
ICE FOR LARGE ESKY (125L) We do not run a fridge onsite due to being an off-the grid property. There is a large commercial grade esky for use during your stay. Packed properly with ice (3-5 bags) the esky will easily keep food cold for up to week. We have provided containers of various sizes to sit inside the esky, this prevents your food getting wet from the ice. Feel free to help yourself to as many off these as you need. Ice is available from Ebor service station. However, if you’re travelling through Dorrigo, Armidale or Grafton its quickest to grab your ice from the service station on your way through. You will need to bring your own torches, food and supplies and an extra Esky if you are a large party, tea light candles if you want to use those while you stay and any equipment you may need for hiking or fishing.
Practicalities and taking care in the bush
Because of its wilderness setting and off-grid status, some resources are limited and we ask you to give these your special attention.
We have a detailed guest book available at the Hut that contains all key information about your stay at the property. Please read through this carefully to ensure a safe and smooth stay.
Water is precious and we rely solely on rain for our supply. So please be mindful of your usage whilst staying there, by having no showers or short showers and not leaving taps running unnecessarily – if the landscape on your way to the property is looking dry and brown it means it hasn’t rained for a while and water is scarce. We truck water in during dry periods at significant cost and ask that guests are respectful and practical about it’s consumption.
Similarly, our lighting is solar-powered please only turn them on in the room you are using and do not leave them on unnecessarily. This is not the city and your resources are limited.
Rubbish
Due to its remote location, guests must take their rubbish with them, when they leave. There is a public tip less then 10 min away where guests can drop off their rubbish.
Departure & Animal policy
We provide you with a clear set of simple departure instructions in the hut information folder, so you can shut off the solar, gas and water safely. It is a condition of every booking that guests agree to follow a few simple steps to secure the hut and ensure our expensive solar and water systems are well looked after.
Dogs and domestic pets are not permitted at the hut, as we have to juggle the needs of all our guests and we are unable to manage dog hair without a vacuum cleaner. Besides, this is cattle country and dogs could also be tempted to round up the cows!
However, horses are most welcome at Hernani. The hut is situated right on the National Trail, the longest uninterrupted hiking and riding trail in Southern hemisphere. If you plan to bring your horses to ride the trail, we suggest you get the National Trail book with all the necessary trail information.

After this date you forfeit your booking. Should you cancel your booking within the 4 week period you will forfeit your booking.
If you book another date that is less value than your original booking we do not offer refunds for the balance of value. If you reschedule your booking at a higher rate your booking will be amended to reflect the higher rate. If you have cold or flu like symptoms, please provide us with a PCR or RAT test 24 hours prior to your arrival to conform your health status and others travelling with you.
If guests test positive and are unable to come to their holiday they will forfeit their holiday (unless they have travel insurance to cover this). We apologise but we no longer offer refunds or travel credits for last minute cancellations, should a guest test positive prior to their arrival, as we will be unable to fill that booking. Please ensure you take extra care of your health and safety in the week prior to arriving to ensure you are Covid free. You will need to rebook your dates no less than 4 weeks prior to your original booking dates. You are only eligible to have one change of dates unless COVID restrictions are enforced again.
Booking Adjustments
If for any reason you reduce the number of guests from your original booking, we do not offer refunds or travel credits for this change. We simply ask that you notify us of this amendment, so we can ensure the house is set up properly for your stay. If you choose to increase your guest list and we can accommodate the extra guests we will amend your booking to reflect the extra cost of these guests. We are unable to accommodate different numbers of guests on different nights, so you must book for the maximum number of guests staying.
Security Damage Deposit Bond
Your security damage deposit bond will be refunded within 7 days of your departure. If there is accidental damage to our property or belongings or you have failed to observe our house rules or leave the property as we have asked, we will deduct the necessary funds from your bond to repair or replace the damaged items. We will send you an itemised list of the damage and the cost of repair or replacement with supporting photos.
